Newcastle United fans have had a mixed response to the news that Dwight Gayle is set to stay at St. James’ Park.

The Chronicle claim that Newcastle cannot find a buyer for Gayle, who they rate at £15 million, and Steve Bruce has now decided to keep him around.

Gayle had looked to be heading for the exit door at Newcastle when Rafael Benitez was in charge, and he was loaned out for the entirety of last campaign.

However, Gayle impressed at West Bromwich Albion, as he scored prolifically at Championship level.

Bruce now seemingly wants to give Gayle another chance to impress with the Magpies, as nobody has stumped up a big enough offer to buy him.

And while some Newcastle fans are happy with the transfer development, others think that Gayle needs to be offloaded.

Gayle will be competing with new signing Joelinton and Yoshinori Muto for a place up front at Newcastle over the upcoming season.

The clinical finisher has missed much of Newcastle’s pre-season so far due to injury.
