The former Newcastle United manager is one of several names being linked with the Sunderland vacancy.

Steve McClaren’s nine months in charge at St James’ Park brought little joy to supporters of Newcastle United. But that could be about to change amid reports linking McClaren with the managerial vacancy at Newcastle’s north-east rivals, Sunderland.
According to the Northern Echo, McClaren, who has also worked as Middlesbrough boss, has been in touch with Sunderland since Jack Ross’s sacking on Tuesday.
It is fair to say that few of a Mackems persuasion are enthused by the speculation. But that is certainly not the case up the road in Tyneside.
This is how Newcastle fans are reacting on Twitter…
McClaren is a former assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and experienced some success after going it alone at Middlesbrough, FC Twente and Derby County.
But a disastrous spell in charge of the England national team did significant damaged to the 58-year-old’s reputation, which has not been helped by further difficult ones at Wolfsburg, Twente (again), Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and QPR.

In all seriousness – would McClaren do a job for Sunderland?
