The Magpies are allegedly keen on signing the Wolfsburg frontman.
Newcastle United have not let relegation stop them from spending big money in the transfer window and it looks as though they could be set to bring in another high-profile addition in the form of Bas Dost.
HITC Sport exclusively revealed on Monday that the Magpies had opened talks with the Wolfsburg star over a potential move to St. James’ Park.
Rafael Benitez already has Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ayoze Perez, Adam Armstrong, and summer signing Dwight Gayle to call upon in attack, with Gayle having scored four goals in his first four games for the club.
However, Dost’s prominence in the German Bundesliga means that he would arguably be the highest-profile of the club’s attacking options if he was to make the move.
The 27-year-old Netherlands international has scored 47 goals in 115 games for Wolfsburg, and has also netted once in six caps for his country.
However, with the German club having signed veteran frontman Mario Gomez this summer, it appears as though Dost could be allowed to leave.
Though Aston Villa have also been cited as holding an interest in the player, Newcastle look to be at the front of the queue as they have already opened talks with the player and his representatives over a move worth around £10 million.
Reacting on Twitter to the news, many Newcastle fans were understandably excited about the 6 foot 5 inch striker wearing black-and-white this season.
However, other supporters were not as sold on the idea, either because they do not believe Dost would make the drop down to the Championship or because they think £10 million on a player with a complete lack of experience in English football would be too risky.
