Gilliead’s exit is said to have piqued the interest of Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, as he looks to add to his squad at Ibrox.

Newcastle United fans are reacting on Twitter to news that one of their youngsters will leave them for nothing this summer, and reports of interest from Glasgow Rangers.

According to the Chronicle, talks between Newcastle and Alex Gilliead have reached an impasse, with the Magpies opting against submitting a revised offer and Gilliead claiming he could not see a path to the first team – all of which is said to have piqued the attention of Rangers’ new manager Steven Gerrard.

Local winger Gilliead has impressed in loan spells at Carlisle United, Luton Town and Bradford City and some of the Geordie faithful feel he was unfairly overlooked by their boss Rafa Benitez.

Others, however, believe the time had come for Newcastle to part ways with the Rangers linked talent.
