The boyhood Newcastle United fan has been invited to train with Sunderland.

The former Newcastle United defender David Edgar could be heading to Sunderland on trial.
The news, which was broken by HITC Sport on Tuesday, has been all but confirmed by the Sunderland manager, Jack Ross, who suggested via the Echo that he is waiting to hear back from the boyhood Newcastle supporter.
Edgar began his career on Tyneside, where his father Eddie once played, but left for Burnley in 2009, prior to spells at Birmingham City, Vancouver Whitecaps, Nashville Soccer Club and Ottawa Fury, who recently announced his release.
But would those of a Newcastle persuasion mind if Edgar’s next destination is Sunderland?
This is what they’re saying on Twitter…

Not really bothered, he was a bit part player a long time ago. He showed his colours by ******* off when we went down “to further his career”. That went well didn’t it?

Couldn’t give a ****

He was ***** then and he is still ***** so let him play for them ****…..
Such views aren’t held by all Magpies fans, however…
Edgar, who turns 32 next year, is two-footed and as a result can play anywhere across the back line.
The Ontario born defender returned to England as a nine-year-old, but has played 44 times for Canada.
