Redfearn was just confirmed as Newcastle under-23 boss last month.
Now he could be needed to step up after Rafa Benitez’s contract expired.
Redfearn is qualified to handle the role on a temporary basis.
He had two caretaker spells in charge of Leeds United in 2014/15, with the second seeing him appointed full-time.
Redfearn also had a stint as manager of Rotherham United
His expertise is in youth football, and he could help some of the younger players in pre-season.
Nonetheless, it’s a stark step down for Newcastle from Rafa Benitez, while the club looks for a permanent successor.
