Newcastle United were pretty quiet in the January transfer window, but they are now striking a deal outside of the window.
Joe Willock came in on loan from Arsenal, but that was all Newcastle did β and they have now decided to swoop for a free agent.
The Telegraph report that Newcastle are set to win the race for defender Matthew Bondswell after he was released by RB Leipzig in January.
Leeds United and West Ham United are also keen on signing Bondswell, but itβs Newcastle who have won the race for his signature.
Bondswell, 18, was highly regarded at Nottingham Forest before Leipzig won the race, beating a host of top clubs to his signature.
It hasnβt quite worked out for Bondswell in Germany, and he now returns to England with Newcastle, where he will initially turn out for their Under-23βs before moving up to the first team.

Newcastle fans have been pretty split on the move so far, with some βamazedβ that Bondswell has been allowed to leave Leipzig for free, believing that the Magpies have landed a talent for the future.
Others think that they wonβt see Bondswell again, feeling that he will fade away and move on to better things in the future, much like Kevin Mbabu.
