There was a double celebration for Newcastle United on Monday night.
Not only did Peter Beardsley’s Under-23 side come out 4-1 winners against Reading, but a familiar name managed a rare 90 minutes on his comeback from injury.
Massadio Haidara started and finished the victory for his first game since the last day of last season and he seems available to finally challenge Paul Dummett and Javier Manquillo for a left-back berth.
The 24-year-old is approaching his five-year anniversary as a Newcastle player but injuries have limited him to only 37 league appearances following his £2 million move from Nancy in January 2013.
But fans of the Magpies on Twitter are delighted to have him fit again – for now at least.
With Dummett still out injured, Haidara might fancy his chances of being named in the Premier League squad for Saturday’s visit of Watford, though Manquillo is likely to continue at left-back.
But the Frenchman’s return can only be a good thing for squad depth and Newcastle fans are right to be happy about his return.
