Newcastle United are through to the third round of the Carabao Cup after beating Blackburn Rovers 1-0.

The Magpies started their season with a superb 2-0 win at West Ham United, and followed that up with a home win – though the performance wasn’t perfect.

The winning goal came in the first half, as Miguel Almiron played Ryan Fraser through on goal, and he slotted past Thomas Kaminski.

This was Fraser’s Newcastle debut, so capping it off with a goal was a perfect start for the Scot, who joined the Magpies last week.

Fraser wasn’t the only debutant in the side though, as Mark Gillespie was given the nod between the sticks.

Signed from Motherwell over the summer, Gillespie has returned to Newcastle having been released by his boyhood club aged 16.

Likely to be third-choice this season, Gillespie turned in an impressive display last night, making three saves whilst showing great distribution and command of his area.

Fans have taken to Twitter to hail the 28-year-old, branding him ‘a machine’ and ‘really impressive’.

Some loved his distribution from the back, and believe that he may actually be a more reliable keeper than Karl Darlow, who is currently deputising for Martin Dubravka.
