Benitez is a massive fan of the centre-back, but Newcastle’s options in the heart of their defence are strong.
Fabian Schar has established himself as Newcastle’s top centre-back after a brilliant debut campaign, and it is arguable that when Florian Lejeune is fit, he is ahead of Lascelles in the pecking order.
If Lazio are to make a bid for Lascelles they could be waiting a while to get a response from Newcastle.
The Magpies are not doing any transfer business until they sort of Benitez’s future, with the Spaniard having just over two weeks remaining on his contract.
