No Liverpool player covered himself in glory during Monday’s shock 1-0 defeat at Swansea City, but former Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum was especially poor.

The Netherlands international, who joined Newcastle for £14.5 million in 2015 and left for £25 million a year later, was invisible in Liverpool’s midfield.

It was the typical Wijnaldum performance away from home for the Reds, with the former PSV Eindhoven star not doing much wrong, but not doing much right either.

In failing to turn up against the Swans, Wijnaldum, in a way, contributed to Newcastle’s worries to some extent.

Rafael Benitez’s side are only a point above the relegation zone in 15th place, and those three points against Liverpool have given bottom-of-the-table Swansea a big lifeline, which in turn means that United are scrapping with one more team for survival.
