The French attacker is one of the best players in Ligue 1 this season after netting 16 goals in 28 games for Marseille.
Thauvin endured a disappointing first five months at Newcastle after being signed by Steve McClaren in the summer of 2015, and hasn’t returned since being loaned to Marseille the following January.
Having cost £15 million, the 25-year-old was deemed a flop by the Magpies but fast forward a couple of years and Newcastle fans could hardly call him a bad player – especially after the latest report.
According to CIES, the Football Observatory, Thauvin is now worth approximately £73 million after his outstanding season and here is how fans of the North-East giants reacted to the news.
Newcastle were relegated six months after Thauvin left to re-join the French side on loan, so going back to a Championship club and playing under Rafael Benitez was never a viable option.
But it is worth asking whether he would have excelled under the Spaniard, who is far and away a better manager than Steve McClaren, but we’re unlikely to ever know for sure whether it was McClaren or the physicality of English football which prevented him from shining in the Premier League.
