Newcastle United fans have praised Callum Roberts for his performance against Sunderland last night.
Newcastle’s under-23’s were beaten 4-0 by Sunderland in the Checkatrade Trophy with Jack Ross’ side running out comfortable winners in the end.
But Newcastle fans were still impressed by Roberts’ display, as he managed to cause some problems at the Stadium of Light.
Roberts was given first-team chances at Newcastle in pre-season, but Rafael Benitez has overlooked him this season.
The youngster has only played at development squad level, despite being considered one of Newcastle’s brightest talents.
Newcastle were not expected to win yesterday, but Roberts’ ability to cause Sunderland some problems has to be considered encouraging.
Whether Roberts will be promoted to Newcastle’s first-team or loaned out this month remains to be seen.
Benitez has shown a willingness to play Newcastle’s brightest youngsters this season, with Sean Longstaff receiving some minutes for the senior side.
