Could Victor Fernandez make a rapid jump to the Newcastle United first team?
Newcastle United under-23 manager Peter Beardsley was delighted by Fernandez’s performance
Newcastle youngster Victor Fernandez made a huge impression for the club’s under-23 side yesterday in a win over Bristol City.
Fernandez scored his first goal for the club and set up two more to inspire Peter Beardsley’s side to a 4-0 win.
The Spaniard made his debut a week earlier for the under-23s, following his recent switch from Spanish side Cornella.
Beardsley praised the winger, telling Newcastle’s official website he was encouraged by Fernandez’s display.
He said: “Victor did well at West Brom last week and he did well again today. He’s a nice lad – he speaks good English, so he has been good with the group.
“We all know that he will have to work on his physical strength – a bit like Yasin (Ben El-Mhanni) has had to do – but when you’re new to a club, it makes a difference if you can score or make a goal.”
Can Fernandez follow in Jonas Gutierrez’s footsteps?
Fernandez is only 18 and will hope to replicate his performances and catch first team manager Rafa Benitez’s eye.
There is still plenty of work for him to do in order to reach first team status, but Fernandez could not have hoped for a better start, and there are positive signs for the future.
Newcastle United may have unearthed a gem.
