Newcastle United striker Ayoze Perez has not scored with any frequency this season.
Newcastle United fans have had a mixed response to Rafael Benitez’s comments on them booing Ayoze Perez.
Perez was heavily criticised by the St. James’ Park crowd, during Newcastle’s defeat to West Ham United at the weekend.
The Spanish striker was guilty of missing a number of presentable opportunities and the voices of discontent towards him were audible.
But Benitez defended the striker after the match, saying to the Chronicle: “We have to understand that everybody wants to win, starting with the players.
“I’m sure that the first one disappointed will be Ayo, or anyone who had chances during the game or anyone who made a mistake in defence or anyone who missed a pass.”
Newcastle fans are divided over the treatment of Perez though, with some suggesting he deserved the stick.
Others though are more sympathetic towards the forward, who has failed impress this term.
Newcastle fans’ frustrations with Perez was heightened because of the scoreline in the contest.
West Ham were 3-0 winners at St. James’ Park, which brought their winning run to an end.
Newcastle are now in 15th place in the Premier League table, just three points above the relegation zone.
