Newcastle United have walked away from a deal with Anderlecht for Matz Sels.

Anderlecht were trying to buy Sels from Newcastle this summer, after the goalkeeper enjoyed a successful loan spell with the Belgian side this summer.

However, the Chronicle have reported that Newcastle would not budge from their £3 million asking price for the 26-year-old and the transfer has now fallen through at the last minute.

Most Newcastle fans are at a loss over why a compromise couldn’t be found between the two clubs, as Sels appears to have very little future at St. James’ Park.

Rafael Benitez is expected to be handed whatever money Newcastle raise from sales to spend on new players, so Sels’ failure to move on is a blow.

Newcastle already have Martin Dubravka, Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow ahead of Sels in the pecking order for places at St. James’ Park, so he appears unlikely to get game time on Tyneside any time soon.

Whether Anderlecht, or another side, will come back in for Sels later in the transfer window remains to be seen.
