Leigh Griffiths’ stunning brace for Scotland against England at the weekend has reportedly put him on the radar of Newcastle United.

The Daily Record report Rafa Benitez is keen on the striker, who has been at Celtic since 2014.

His role at Celtic has diminished over the past season due to Moussa Dembele’s impact at the club, but he is just one season removed from a campaign in which he scored 40 goals in all competitions.

The 26-year-old played briefly in the English Premier League for Wolves before they suffered consecutive relegations and he left for Celtic.

Newcastle’s first choice striker is currently Dwight Gayle, and they are reportedly close to adding Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham on loan, ESPN report, and also have Aleksandr Mitrovic as another option.

It is unclear quite where Griffiths would fit in among these three, while Celtic would be sensible to hang onto him in case they are pressured into selling Dembele.

For his very respectable goalscoring record in Scotland and his brace at the weekend, Griffiths isn’t the high profile striker which will have Newcastle fans overawed at the club’s ambition.
