Henri Saivet has left Newcastle United to sign with French side Saint Etienne on a season long loan, with the Ligue 1 club confirming the deal this morning.

Saivet was signed by Steve McClaren in January, and follows Florian Thauvin and Andros Townsend as players who have quit the club after less than a year.

When he arrived from Bordeaux, the central midfielder was touted as a potential game changer in Newcastle’s battle against relegation, but he never really got going.

Saivet made only two starts for Newcastle, and could not help them avoid relegation. He did not impress Rafa Benitez and has played no part this campaign to date.

Newcastle are not missing him, with Saivet never really bringing anything to the table in the first place, and the Magpies sit in seventh in the Championship.

It did not help arriving in the midst of a relegation battle, but Saivet must take his share of criticism too for the way it worked out, and his inability to impress Benitez.
