Newcastle are frontrunners to sign Fabian Delph.

Newcastle United were named this week as frontrunners to sign Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph, by bookmakers Ladbrokes.

The Toon are just 4/1 to sign the England international and ex Aston Villa captain, who has had an injury hit spell at City and lost his place in the international set up.

A drop down to the Championship may not be appealing to a player who could feature in the Champions League knockout stages for his side, but if anybody can convince him, then it is Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez.

The 27-year-old has made only two substitute appearances for City this year with injuries curtailing his chances, but it would be no surprise if Pep Guardiola told him he was free to leave on loan this January.

Newcastle have been linked with central midfielders all month long, with the Chronicle reporting it is a position Benitez wants to strengthen in January.

Delph would be a high quality addition, who would surely make winning promotion a foregone conclusion, as if it is not already.

If he is enjoying his football then there would be a good chance of Delph being willing to sign permanently in the summer if Newcastle are a Premier League side.
