Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic was on target last night as Serbia held Wales to a 1-1 draw in World Cup qualifying.

The 22-year-old cancelled out Aaron Ramsey’s first-half penalty to salvage a point for his country and make one to Newcastle fans.

It was a very tidy finish from the linked-away marksman, beating Wayne Hennessey at his near post to remind Magpies supporters what he can do after a tough season.

Mitrovic spent so much of the 2016-17 campaign playing second fiddle to Dwight Gayle in United’s attack, starting 11 Championship games and scoring four goals.

It was reported by The Chronicle last week that Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez would be willing to sell him if another team were to stump up £14 million.

But fans of the North-East club don’t seem keen on losing him after his heroics on international duty.

He is clearly a talent, despite a few character flaws, but it remains to be seen whether he will be at the club by September 1 when the transfer window shuts.

One thing that isn’t up for debate is that quite a lot of supporters want him to stay right where he is.
