Newcastle United fans are pleased to hear that Mikel Merino looks likely to stay at St. James’ Park.

There had been suggestions that Newcastle could look to offload Merino for around £13 million in the summer.

However, the Chronicle have now suggested that Merino will stay at Newcastle for the foreseeable future, as Rafael Benitez is a big fan.

And Newcastle supporters are pleased that Merino now looks likely to be a part of their squad for next season.

Merino started this campaign in brilliant form, and his loan move from Borussia Dortmund was quickly made permanent.

However, the Spanish midfielder has lost his place in Newcastle’s starting line-up more recently.

Benitez has generally favoured Mohamed Diame and Jonjo Shelvey in midfield over recent weeks.

Merino could have a big part to play next season though, as he will have a year’s more experienced behind him, and he clearly has the ability to perform a key role at St. James’ Park.
