The 52-year-old won three of his 20 games in charge of Newcastle United. At least he lasted a little longer at Omonia Nicosia.

As a neutral, it’s difficult not to feel a little sorry for John Carver. After all, his passion for Newcastle United was plan to see from day on even if his management style was a little, let’s say, uninspiring.

According to The Chronicle, the long-serving Magpies assistant was sacked as head coach of Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia after less than a season at the helm. To many, the news came as a great surprise, if only because nobody knew he’d been there for the last eight months.

After falling 12 points behind title rivals APOEL, a quarter-final defeat in the Cyprus Cup proved to be the straw that put this particular camel out of its misery with fans tossing flares onto the turf and demanding the heard of their Geordie gaffer.

Turns out the self-professed ‘best coach in the Premier League’, as reported by the BBC, was a little out of his depth in a league ranked by UEFA as the 24th best in Europe.

Though, despite his almost painful adoration for his hometown club, Newcastle fans need little encouragement to let the 52-year-old know in no uncertain terms exactly what they think of his managerial nous.
