Newcastle United claimed a huge victory on Tuesday night, with Matt Targett shining in in a 3-1 victory over Everton at St James’ Park.
The Magpies simply had to get a win against Everton. With the January transfer window closed and new signings on board, Newcastle needed to get moving.
It didn’t look like being Newcastle’s night when Jamaal Lascelles put through his own goal, but Everton’s Mason Holgate was feeling charitable and did the exact same thing.
Ryan Fraser scrambled in from close range to put Newcastle ahead, before Kieran Trippier’s goal secured all three points.
That result hauls Newcastle out of the drop zone as things stand, and gives Eddie Howe a second straight win.
The focus will be on Trippier after his goal, or even new Brazilian star Bruno Guimaraes after he made his debut.
Yet the performance of left back Matt Targett can’t be overlooked after the Aston Villa loanee turned in a strong display.
Left back has been a problem position for Newcastle for many years, even after splashing the cash on signing Jamal Lewis.
Yet with Targett on board, Newcastle look a lot better down that side.

Targett recorded three clearances, two interceptions, two aerial duels, one accurate cross and one key pass, looking solid throughout.
After losing his spot at Aston Villa to Lucas Digne, Targett will now be looking forward to regular playing time with Newcastle.
Newcastle fans have been taking to Twitter to praise Targett, suggesting that he was ‘incredible’ against Everton.
Others feel the January signing was ‘outstanding’ and ‘excellent’, even a ‘massive improvement’ at left back.
Let’s hope Targett can keep this form up and keep Newcastle up in the process.
