On a free transfer, Hernandez would be a bargain, and while he would not be first choice, he would add depth to an area where nobody truly excelled for Newcastle last season, and where there are no obvious solutions.
He netted eight goals in 10 games for Hull late in the season after bouncing back from a knee injury, although struggled in the Premier League a year earlier.
If Newcastle were persuaded to move, they would have to do so quickly.
Leeds United are aggressively pursuing Hernandez’s signature, and Leeds Live report the club are confident of agreeing personal terms with the Uruguayan.
