Newcastle United fans react as Sunderland near a drop to League One.

Sunderland fans celebrate during the Barclays Premier League match between Sunderland and Everton at the Stadium of Light on May 11, 2016 in Sunderland, England.

Sunderland moved closer to dropping down to League One last night without even playing.

Championship competitors Birmingham City won away at Bolton to record a 1-0 victory, and move further away from the drop zone.

It leaves Sunderland eight points adrift of safety, despite their surprise win over Aston Villa a week ago.

Chris Coleman’s side appear set for a second successive relegation, much to the delight of Newcastle United supporters.

Up until a couple of years ago, Newcastle and Sunderland played out their rivalry in the Premier League.

Sunderland took great joy in coming out on top in regular matches against the Toon, and played a role in their relegation to the Championship in 2016.

Fast forward two years and the tables have turned, to a nightmare scenario for the Mackems.

Newcastle United fans look on during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Southampton at St. James Park on March 10, 2018 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Newcastle passed Sunderland last season as they were promoted and the Black Cats relegated.

This season Newcastle appear to be closing in on retaining their place in the top flight, while Sunderland fall further behind.

Perhaps the question which needs to be asked, is how much further will Sunderland sink?
