Newcastle United fans want Javier Hernandez to join if Jonjo Shelvey joins West Ham United.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United had a “tentative interest” in signing West Ham United’s Javier Hernandez this month.
Hernandez’s long-term future in East London has been plunged into doubt after his agent told Fox Sports this week that his out-of-favour client, who has started one Premier League game since David Moyes took the reins at West Ham, has a number of other opportunities on the table.
Newcastle icon Alan Shearer revealed last month that Hernandez – a £16 million signing under Slaven Bilic in July – was close to joining the Magpies last summer but owner Mike Ashley pulled the plug on the deal.
With The Sun reporting today that West Ham have stepped up their interest in Newcastle star Jonjo Shelvey, fans of the North-East club have questioned whether a swap deal suits both clubs.
The swap deal in English football is back en vogue at the moment after the transfer which saw Alexis Sanchez join Manchester United in exchange for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Arsenal.
And it doesn’t seem like another one involving West Ham and Newcastle is a bad idea.
Magpies boss Rafael Benitez needs a striker, with Joselu and Dwight Gayle failing to muster much in the goalscoring stakes this season, while West Ham manager David Moyes is on record as saying he wants a Premier League-experienced midfielder, hence Shelvey.
But for now it looks like if Benitez does wind up signing a centre-forward it’ll be Nicolai Jorgensen, the subject of a rejected £14 million (The Mail) bid today and the Spanish manager is poised to follow it up.
