Newcastle United have been heavily linked with Dennis Praet over the past week or so.

It looks like Siem De Jong is set to leave Newcastle United.

The 28-year-old is, according to Telesport, going to seal his return to former club Ajax this week.

If and when that materialises, Newcastle will need a new number 10 and all of the speculation seems to be centering around a certain Dennis Praet.

The Belgian, who has a £22.9 million release clause at Sampdoria, is rumoured to be a target of Magpies boss Rafael Benitez who, according to Il Secolo XI, has already bid for the 23-year-old playmaker this month.

And fans of the St James’s Park club believe that De Jong’s imminent exit is a sign that Praet will join.

The problem with Praet is that it is difficult for Newcastle fans to get overly excited about him, given he scored once and set up one goal during 32 Serie A appearances last term.

It was, in his defence, his first season in Italy following a switch from Anderlecht last summer, but such modest stats still don’t inspire the utmost confidence.
