The Spaniard, who arrived from Stoke City for £5 million, had only netted four times in 22 Premier League appearances for the Potters.
Fast forward a few months and Newcastle fans should be realising that there was a very good reason why he arrived for peanuts – because he offers peanuts.
Benitez shelled out virtually nothing for the 27-year-old and the former Liverpool manager is getting what he paid: virtually nothing.
The former Real Madrid B man is already enduring a tough time in the North East following a couple of wasteful performances against Swansea and Brighton in recent weeks.
He could – and definitely should – have scored at least once in each game but it is one profilgate performance after the other for a man who probably should be dropped for Dwight Gayle when United clash with Liverpool next weekend.
On Sunday, he missed a superb chance in the 1-0 defeat Brighton which proved costly and Benitez might be paying a hefty price for not finding a more ruthless, clinical figure.
Of course, Benitez had his hands tied somewhat due to financial restrictions imposed by the owner, but he won’t convince Newcastle fans that Joselu was the best option available.
