Newcastle United tried to use Chris Wood as a makeweight in their move for Everton winger Anthony Gordon, before offloading the striker.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Newcastle are hoping to snap up Everton wide man Gordon very soon.

Everton want £60million for Gordon though, which is a price tag beyond what the Magpies want to pay.

Newcastle tried to get around the price tag by offering striker Wood to Everton in part-exchange for the wide man.

Everton seemingly didn’t want to go for that deal though and Newcastle ended up sending Wood to Nottingham Forest instead.

Wood has ended up joining Forest on loan with a view to a permanent move at the end of the season as Forest look to stay up.

Everton could have done worse than Chris Wood in Anthony Gordon deal

Wood cost Newcastle a huge £25million in January of last year but has already been moved on.

The 31-year-old now gives Forest a proven Premier League goalscorer in attack – and that sounds like exactly what Everton need.

The Toffees just don’t have a reliable source of goals right now.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin isn’t the player he was and Neal Maupay has struggled since joining over the summer.

Wood may not be a particularly exciting move but he would have given Everton a solid option in attack.

The New Zealand international hit 49 goals in 144 games for Burnley before making his big move to Newcastle last year.

Wood was never able to nail down a starting spot though with Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak ahead of him in the pecking order.

It’s a little surprising that Everton didn’t take that offer from Newcastle, though maybe the cash involved wasn’t up to what they wanted.

Newcastle surely won’t be paying £60million for Gordon but with Wood now at Forest, it’s hard to see a part-exchange deal happening here.
