Newcastle United are focusing on appointing Roberto Martinez or Unai Emery over Paulo Fonseca in their search for a new manager.
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Fonseca is fading away from the Newcastle managerial hunt.
The Telegraph claimed last month that Fonseca was being offered a £6million-a-year at Newcastle.
That seemingly isn’t on the table anymore and Fonseca won’t be heading to St James’ Park.
Out of work after leaving Roma, Fonseca is experiencing deja vu after a similar situation happened at Tottenham over the summer.
The report adds that Aston Villa are now moving for Fonseca, lining him up to replace Dean Smith after four defeats in a row.
Newcastle focus on Emery and Martinez
It’s suggested that there are two names Newcastle’s owners are focusing on in the pursuit of Steve Bruce’s replacement.
The main target is Villarreal boss Emery, but Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez is also on the wish list.

The move for Emery appears to be ramping up amid claims he has support throughout Newcastle’s ownership structure.
Newcastle do need alternatives just in case they can’t land Emery though, and Martinez appears to be the man.
Both Spaniards have Premier League experience but left under clouds with Arsenal and Everton respectively.
Both would likely be upgrades on Steve Bruce though, bringing a more expansive brand of football to Newcastle if appointed.
