Newcastle United scrapped all other interviews with potential managers this week in the belief that Unai Emery would be taking the job.
That’s according to The Mirror, who claim that Newcastle were so sure Emery was leaving Villarreal that all other candidates were pushed aside.
However, with a clause in the deal meaning the new Newcastle manager can be sacked if the club are relegated, Emery said no.
Add in that Emery was ‘furious’ that Newcastle leaked the move to the press and the Spaniard decided Tyneside wasn’t for him.
Emery will now stay put with Villarreal, leaving Newcastle to go back to the drawing board in their search for a new boss.
Fonseca back in the Newcastle plans?
The report adds that Paulo Fonseca could now be approached again by Newcastle.
Newcastle held talks with Fonseca early in their managerial process.
The Telegraph even claimed that Newcastle were willing to pay Fonseca £6million-a-year having impressed Amanda Staveley.

The move has gone cold since though, with Fonseca seemingly on the outside looking in.
Yet with Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie reporting that Fonseca is now keen to speak to Newcastle again after the Emery move collapsed, the Magpies could be interested again.
Eddie Howe is another option, with Newcastle left scrambling after Emery’s U-turn.
