Newcastle United appear to be closing in on Michael Emenalo, but they are also considering Ajax’s Edwin van der Sar as a possible alternative.
That’s according to 90Min, who claim that Van der Sar is under consideration for the director of football job at Newcastle.
Emenalo is the favourite for the job right now, with The Telegraph claiming that he is PIF’s top choice.
Emenalo has met with Newcastle’s new owners in Saudi Arabia, and looks set for a Premier League return more than four years since leaving Chelsea.
Yet if there is any late issue, Van der Sar is one name Newcastle have an eye on.
A number of other names have been mentioned, but Newcastle’s interest in Van der Sar appears to be a fresh development.
Newcastle target Van der Sar brings real prestige
Emenalo has history with Chelsea and Monaco, and has made some exciting signings in his career.
Van der Sar is currently Ajax’s chief executive, meaning he has worked as a key cog in one of the most well-run teams in the world.

Think about his playing career too; four Eredivisie titles, four Premier League titles, one Champions League, one UEFA Cup.
Van der Sar turned out for huge clubs in Ajax, Juventus and Manchester United all whilst racking up 130 caps for the Netherlands.
Van der Sar has a great reputation both on and off the pitch. Landing him would show Newcastle fans that the club really means business, giving them a figure to instantly gravitate towards just from his reputation.
It seems that Emenalo is the most likely appointment for Newcastle, but keep an eye on Van der Sar too.
