Newcastle United are poised to appoint Eddie Howe as their new manager – and he has been studying with Atletico Madrid and Liverpool in his time away.

That’s according to The Telegraph, who claim that Howe has been visiting other clubs since leaving Bournemouth in the summer of 2020.

One of them was Atletico Madrid, where Howe went to study the methods of Diego Simeone.

Oh how Newcastle would love Howe to become their very own Simeone over the coming years.

Whilst in the Spanish capital, Howe also visited Rayo Vallecano to work with their budding young coach Andoni Iraola.

The report adds that Howe even spent two days with Liverpool – but he wasn’t studying Jurgen Klopp during his time there.

Instead, Howe met with Liverpool technical director Michael Edwards and academy director Alex Inglethorpe.

Howe is understood to have a strong relationship with Edwards. Howe was playing for Portsmouth when Edwards joined the club as an analyst in 2003.

Howe wanted to learn more about recruitment, both because he needs to find quality players at Newcastle and because that was a problem for him at Bournemouth.

There are few in the game better to speak to than Edwards right now, and Newcastle could reap the rewards.

As for Inglethorpe, Howe wanted to understand how Liverpool have overhauled their youth recruitment – something that would be vital for Newcastle given their lack of youth success in recent times.

Howe has clearly been putting the work in even whilst out of a job, and Newcastle will hope it pays off for them.
