Newcastle United have been eyeing the likes of Manu Kone and Edson Alvarez but Eddie Howe wants more Premier League experience.

That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that Newcastle are eyeing up a ‘number six’ to add to their midfield.

That means a holding midfield player who can hopefully dictate the game from deep with great passing ability whilst also being able to break up play.

The idea for Newcastle is that bringing in a number six will then free up the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton to go forward.

Moises Caicedo and Youri Tielemans have been linked with Newcastle of late and they seem to fit what Howe wants.

This profile of player seems to be what Newcastle want right now, more so than an attacking midfielder like James Maddison.

Howe wants Premier League experience at Newcastle United

Newcastle have looked across Europe at potential signings but they don’t seen to take Howe’s fancy, according to that Athletic report.

Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram is one option having impressed in holding midfielder for Nice over in Ligue 1.

Another French option has popped onto Newcastle’s radar with Borussia Monchengladbach talent Manu Kone wanted.

The former Toulouse talent has been outstanding in the Bundesliga and looks destined for a huge move inside the next 18 months.

Another player Newcastle have been watching is Ajax star Edson Alvarez, who was heavily pursued by Chelsea over the summer.

Ajax stood firm and refused to sell because they had already lost so many players, so Mexican ace Alvarez had to stay in the Netherlands.

Whilst Newcastle’s talent spotters appear to be keen on all three, manager Howe isn’t really in the same boat.

It’s stated that Howe ideally wants more Premier League-ready players who can immediately help Newcastle.

That’s how Newcastle approached the last January window too as they signed Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett and Chris Wood alongside import Bruno Guimaraes.

Howe seemingly wants a similar approach now and that means Caicedo and Tielemans are likely the favourites for Newcastle.
