Jamaal Lascelles has admitted on Newcastle United’s official website that he was embarrassed that he celebrated his side’s second goal so passionately, after hearing that it went down as a Henri Lansbury own-goal.

Newcastle beat Villa 2-0 last night, and Lascelles thought he had sealed the three points for Rafael Benitez’s men.

The Newcastle captain flicked a volley towards goal, and the ball trickled into the back of the net.

Upon seeing the replay, though, it was revealed that Villa midfielder Lansbury had got the final touch on the ball before it crossed the line.

And Lascelles admits that he now feels a little bit embarrassed that he went so wild after thinking he had scored.

“It’s quite embarrassing, actually! I was celebrating, going nuts, thinking I’ve just scored a second, and two minutes later they said that it was an own-goal from Lansbury,” the powerful central-defender said. “But, I was obviously in the right place at the right time to flick it, which was all I could do.

Newcastle’s win over Villa has seen them move ahead of Brighton & Albion and to the top of the Championship table.

Newcastle are next in action at the weekend, when they take on out of form Bristol City.
