Newcastle United aren’t giving up on signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, even with striker Chris Wood already snapped up.
That’s according to Portuguese newspaper Record, who claim that Newcastle just aren’t going away from the Nunez chase.
It’s stated that Newcastle are ‘desperate’ to avoid relegation and are willing to pay a staggering fee to bring Nunez to Tyneside.
Nunez is ‘at the top’ of Newcastle’s list for a new striker, and signing Chris Wood seemingly isn’t deterring the Magpies.
Wood joined Newcastle last week but the Magpies still want another striker in this month, preferably a young striker for the future.
Nunez absolutely fits the bill but comes in at around €60million (£50million), meaning Newcastle will have to dig deep for him.
Nunez, 22, has been in ridiculous form this season having racked up 14 goals and two assists in 15 league games over in Portugal.
Physical, aggressive and mobile, Nunez has been likened to fellow Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani – by his own agent Edgardo Lasalvia.
Many clubs are chasing Nunez, but it’s Newcastle who just won’t back away from the race despite being linked with other strikers.
Can Newcastle really pull this one off?

Nunez has been chased by Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Bayern Munich – you name them, they’ve eyed up Nunez.
There should be a striker merry-go-round this summer, and Nunez will be in the conversation as a fallback option for clubs who don’t sign Erling Haaland or Dusan Vlahovic.
Moving to Newcastle this month would be a huge gamble given their relegation battle, and Nunez won’t want to be playing Championship football next month.
To be so insistent on signing Nunez suggests that Newcastle have been given some kind of encouragement though, and may be able to throw money at the promising striker.
Whilst the likes of Hugo Ekitike and Alassane Plea continue to be linked, Nunez is a name to keep a close eye on in the coming weeks.
