According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United could make a move for Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson this summer, if Rafael Benitez is backed with funds, and that would be an excellent signing for the Magpies.

Mawson has impressed with Swansea this season, and the Welsh side’s relegation means that he is almost certain to move on.

Newcastle are now said to be a potential destination for the centre-back, and if he does arrive at St. James’ Park then it could be good news for both club and county.

If Benitez plans to put Mawson alongside Jamaal Lascelles in Newcastle’s defence, then the duo could become England’s centre-back pairing for the years ahead.

Both Mawson and Lascelles are on the verge of making England’s squad for the World Cup in Russia.

The pair may miss out this year, but if they continue to develop alongside each other, then there is only so long they will be ignored for.

And if Mawson and Lascelles are playing together at Newcastle, then their knowledge of each other’s games could help England over the years ahead.
