Newcastle United want Cole McKinnon and could now launch a January move to sign the Rangers talent after shining away from Ibrox.

The Magpies made headlines with the big move for Alexander Isak and also signed Nick Pope and Sven Botman over the summer.

Newcastle have also been looking towards the future though and have been picking up young talents for their development ranks.

Goalkeeper Jude Smith has arrived from East Fife whilst Jordan Hackett and Alex Murphy have come in from Tottenham Hotspur and Galway United respectively.

The transfer deadline may have passed but Newcastle remain on the hunt for young talent and could now try and raid Rangers.

Newcastle United want Cole McKinnon

The Scottish Sun report that Newcastle are now interested in signing Rangers youngster Cole McKinnon.

It’s stated that Newcastle have been sending scouts to watch McKinnon in action on loan at Partick Thistle.

McKinnon has turned out six times in the Championship for Partick Thistle and already has two goals and one assist to his name.

McKinnon scored a late goal for Partick against Arbroath on Saturday, securing a 2-0 victory.

Newcastle may well have been watching McKinnon in action in that game, and the report claims the Magpies could make a bid in January.

McKinnon is under contract at Rangers until 2025, meaning the Gers aren’t necessarily under huge pressure to sell the teenager in 2023.

Primarily a central midfielder who can also play further forward, McKinnon has been tipped for a big future at Rangers.

McKinnon has already made his Rangers debut and has even scored, bagging a superb goal against Hearts back in May.

The Scot, who has three caps for his country at Under-19 level, will want to see a pathway to first-team action at Rangers if he’s going to stay.

Alex Lowry is similarly highly rated but hasn’t played any league action this season, showing the challenge ahead for McKinnon.

Newcastle will hope to sell McKinnon the dream and lure him to St James’ Park, with the Gers surely hoping to avoid losing him as they did with Billy Gilmour.
