Newcastle United fancy Cody Gakpo and are keeping close tabs on his situation as he potentially prepares to leave PSV Eindhoven.
The Magpies have secured a massive signing by landing striker Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad.
That may be the end of Newcastle’s spending for this window, given that the Magpies can’t go wild for new signings.
PIF’s investment is huge but Financial Fair Play rules mean Newcastle can’t go on a Dale Winton-inspired trolley dash just yet.
Still, Newcastle are looking and eyeing up potential opportunities ahead of Thursday’s deadline.
Newcastle United fancy Cody Gakpo
90Min report that Newcastle are keeping tabs on the situation surrounding PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.
It’s stated that Southampton have made an approach for Gakpo, but PSV are seeking a deal worth around €50million (£43million).
Everton, Leeds United and Leicester City are also in the race but Newcastle’s interest is fascinating.
You can argue that Newcastle need a winger anyway and there have been strong links to the likes of Moussa Diaby and Christian Pulisic.
Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy are options out wide but Newcastle could upgrade opposite from Allan Saint-Maximin.
When you add in that Saint-Maximin is now injured, Newcastle could be left very short out wide.
Gakpo would be expensive but he could provide real quality out wide for Newcastle not just immediately, but for years to come.
Gakpo, 23, has already recorded a ridiculous four goals and six assists in eight games this season.
The Dutch international also smashed 21 goals and 15 assists last season, becoming one of the top young wingers in Europe.
It would be a surprise to see Newcastle make a bid for Gakpo before Thursday’s deadline just days after signing Isak.
Yet if Gakpo misses out on a move elsewhere before the deadline, Newcastle would be in a great position to track Gakpo and make him their top target for January.
It’s now over to Southampton to see if they can secure a deal for Gakpo, with Newcastle seemingly watching that move very closely.
