Newcastle and Brighton have both set their sights on the Eredivisie.
Newly promoted Newcastle United and Brighton find themselves in similar situations this January.
They each sit outside the relegation zone but remain wary of getting dragged into a battle as the season progresses.
Newcastle’s bid opening bid was for £14 million – and for that price they could have signed Brighton’s new striker, also straight from the Eredivisie.
Brighton paid £14 million to sign Jurgen Locadia from PSV Eindhoven, and may well reflect that they have got the better deal.
Locadia has scored nine league goals this season, averaging a strike every 139 minutes.
Jorgensen is on seven league goals, with one coming every 151 minutes.
For £6 million extra, Newcastle would be paying for a player who is three years older; at 27 this could be a positive over the more inexperienced Locadia.
Last season Jorgensen significantly outscored Jorgensen, with 25 goals to Locadia’s three, from playing out wide.
Brighton will hope this season is no flash in the pan for Locadia, as he trebles his figures already for last season.
Jorgensen has more of a track record and Newcastle will feel they are buying a more proven player, but Brighton might well end up with the better one for a cheaper price.
