Newcastle United lost 4-0 to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, but former winger Christian Atsu has sent a rousing message to fans.

The Magpies showed some kamikaze defending in the first half, with a mix-up between Ciaran Clark and Martin Dubravka allowing Ruben Dias to score.

Joao Cancelo made it two, before Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling added second half goals to clinch a 4-0 win.

Newcastle were always unlikely to claim a win against City, but the defensive shambles is a major concern.

The fear of being the richest Championship club ever is now very real for Newcastle, with a real relegation battle on the cards.

Atsu tries to motivate Newcastle fans

Newcastle allowed winger Christian Atsu to leave the club last summer, and he now finds himself in Saudi Arabia with Al-Raed.

Atsu, signed by Rafael Benitez in 2016, still pays close attention to Newcastle and their results.

The Ghanaian wide man has taken to Twitter to state that he knows the mentality inside the dressing room.

Atsu played with most of this Newcastle team and clearly believes that they can turn things around having done so before.

Atsu urged fans to ‘keep calm’ and watch how Newcastle get out of this mess – which likely has to start with January signings.
