Newcastle United are close to securing their second January signing with Burnley striker Chris Wood on the verge of joining the Magpies.
The Telegraph reported on Sunday that Wood had emerged as a top target for Newcastle in their hunt for a striker.
That move has now ramped up, with The Telegraph reporting that Wood is heading to the North East for a medical with Newcastle.
Wood moved to the top of Newcastle’s transfer wish list in recent days, and the Magpies have been confident all week that Wood will sign.
The fee involved could be around £25million, with Wood believed to have a release clause around that figure in his Burnley contract.
What’s interesting is that both Eddie Howe and chief scout Steve Nickson are understood to have argued that Wood’s physical attributes are ideal for both scoring goals and linking play.
Wood, 30, may have only scored three times this season but his Premier League record his decent, bagging 49 goals in 144 games for Burnley.

Wood has hit double figures in goals in every season with Burnley, and that reliable scoring option with Callum Wilson out would be ideal.
It’s an expensive price tag for Wood, especially given his limited resale value, but Newcastle just had to find a striker somewhere.
Wood, much like Kieran Trippier, has great Premier League experience and should help Newcastle immediately.
Branded ‘horrible to play against’ by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, Wood now has the chance to shine for Shearer’s boyhood club.
