Newcastle United are now settling into life in the Championship and look set for a promotion charge, despite a difficult start to the campaign.

One of the key reasons for that has been improved form of captain Jamaal Lascelles.

He has been speaking about the club’s aspirations in conversation with the Shields Gazette this weekend.

He has commented on just how tough the league is, and used Leeds United as an example.

This is what he had to say about heading to Elland Road this season:

“It’s a really tough league.

“When you’re going to Leeds United on a Tuesday night and it’s cold and raining, you need big characters.

“You need players to come out of their shells and start using their voices.”

Lascelles can relax for now, as Newcastle are not heading to Leeds for a midweek game this season, but his fear of Leeds will certainly please fans of the Yorkshire club.

There is no doubt that Elland Road is one of the hardest places to visit in the Championship, especially in regards to the passionate and loyal Leeds faithful.

However, the form of Leeds at home has been mixed at best in recent times – with the pressure of succeeding on home soil seemingly taking its toll on some players.

Leeds’ last home win in the Championship was v Wolves in April and they welcome local rivals and league leaders Huddersfield Town this weekend.

Now would be the perfect time to win at home again.
