Newcastle United are currently top of the Championship.
Speaking to Channel 5’s Football on 5 programme, Alan Curbishley has claimed Newcastle United will be able to sign Premier League players in the January transfer window.
The Magpies are currently top of the Championship table, one point ahead of second-placed Brighton and Hove Albion.
They arguably have the strongest squad in the division after spending the summer transfer window extensively adding to their options.
Despite that, it has been predicted they will be active in the winter transfer window to ensure they secure promotion back to the Premier League this year.
Newcastle United Manager Rafael Benitez
Curbishley certainly believes so and claims the club actually have the ability to bring top-flight players to St James Park.
“Newcastle in the window will go again,” he told Football on 5.
“I think they are the one club who can really go and buy the players that can cement them going up.”
“They can buy Premier League players, they can pay the Premier League wages and the player can go there with the confidence that they are going to be a Premier League player next season.”
Newcastle United Manager Rafael Benitez
It will certainly be interesting to see what work if any, that Newcastle do in the January transfer window.
At this moment in time, few would say that their squad needs adding to given they are top of the Championship heading into the busy Christmas period.
However, improvements can always be made and perhaps Rafa Benitez will look to improve his squad for next season in preparation for a likely return to the Premier League.
