Newcastle United appear unlikely to break their transfer record twice in the same transfer window.

Rafael Benitez has told the Daily Mirror that Newcastle United need to break their transfer record on a striker this summer.

Newcastle’s top scorer this season is Ayoze Perez, but the Spanish forward has just six goals to his name.

The Magpies realise that they need to add more of an attacking threat next year.

And Benitez feels that he will need sizeable funds to bring in a forward of proven quality.

Rafael Benitez Manager

“If you want to bring a striker with a guarantee of more than 10-15 goals per season, you have to pay money for him for sure. In this market, yes [that’s more than £16 million].”

Benitez’s transfer plans could make his task of strengthening elsewhere more difficult though.

Mike Ashley has never been one to spend particularly lavishly, so Benitez may have to choose between bringing in either a striker or Joe Allen.

Joe Allen of Stoke City shoots during the Premier League match between Stoke City and Swansea City at Bet365 Stadium on December 2, 2017 in Stoke on Trent, England.

The Sun have suggested that Newcastle want Allen from Stoke City, but the midfielder is valued at £20 million.

It seems highly unlikely that Newcastle will break their transfer record twice in one window, after failing to do so once in the past 13 years.

And Benitez may now have to pick between having a new striker or Allen in his squad next season at St. James’ Park.
