Newcastle United are said to be interested in signing Everton defender Leighton Baines.

According to the Daily Mirror, Newcastle United are interested in signing Leighton Baines from Everton.

Newcastle are said to be keen on the left-back, whose future at Everton is in serious doubt.

And Newcastle’s interest in Baines shouldn’t come as a surprise, as he is a player who Rafael Benitez has admired for years.

In 2013, Benitez, who was then in charge at Chelsea, wanted to bring Baines to Stamford Bridge.

The Daily Mirror reported how Benitez was keen to make Baines Chelsea’s left-back, but they were unable to do a deal with Everton.

At that time, Baines still played an integral role for Everton, but his value has dropped recently.

The Toffees are set to bring in Lucas Digne in the near future, and Newcastle may have hope of doing a deal, when the Frenchman does make the move to Goodison Park.
