According to the Daily Mirror, Rafael Benitez has rejected the opportunity to sell Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey this month, and that is the right decision.

West Ham United had come in to take Shelvey, but Newcastle are not thought to be considering selling the 25-year-old.

Benitez has decided that keeping Shelvey around will be important, and the Spanish boss has made the right call.

Shelvey may not have proven the most reliable performer for Newcastle this season, with his ill-discipline certainly frustrating.

However, the Magpies simply cannot afford to find a player of similar quality on their budget.

While there is a risk of playing Shelvey, due to his fiery temperament, he remains a wonderful passer of the ball, and is technically one of the strongest players in Newcastle’s squad.

With Benitez having limited funds to spend, signing a player with a similar skill set would have been a major challenge.

And Newcastle are far better off keeping Shelvey around, until they have a budget which allows them to go out and sign a definite upgrade.
