Rafael Benitez has confirmed to the Chronicle that Newcastle United youngsters Josef Yarney and Paul Woolston have been called up to first-team training.

Newcastle currently have a number of players out with injury, with the efforts of the season beginning to take their toll.

Benitez has now been keen to freshen things up in training, and has included some of the club’s brightest prospects in first-team training.

Yarney and Woolston have now been training with Newcastle’s senior squad for over a week, and Benitez intends to keep them in training for the time being.

“We have had a few injuries, but we are fine because we have had two or three young players like Yarney and Woolston who have been training with us, so we are fine,” Benitez added.

“They will train with us this week too because Atsu has had his operation, Clark has a problem, and then we have two or three other players who are not perfect or have not been involved so the young players will get a chance in training.”

Yarney is a defender, while Woolston play in goal – and that limits the latter’s chances of playing for the first-team in a competitive game.

Newcastle currently have Martin Dubravka in net, and he looks set to continue in goal until the end of the season.

Yarney, though, may have some chance of being given some game-time before the end of the campaign.

Benitez has promised to make changes for Newcastle’s next match against Tottenham Hotspur, as he looks to inject some exuberance back into his side.
