Newcastle United considered signing Ben Foster but Eddie Howe has decided to sign fellow free agent Loris Karius instead.

The Magpies brought in Nick Pope over the summer, signing the Burnley star to be their first-choice goalkeeper.

Freddie Woodman was sold to Preston North End and with Martin Dubravka seemingly unhappy at being demoted to second-choice, he joined Manchester United… to be second-choice behind David De Gea.

Pope’s backup Karl Darlow is now out injured and Newcastle are left short of cover for Pope, so a free agent will now be snapped up.

Newcastle United considered signing Ben Foster

Newcastle have chosen free agent Loris Karius as their new signing, with an announcement of the German’s arrival being delayed for now.

The former Liverpool stopper is making a shock return to Premier League action but Newcastle did consider other options too.

The Northern Echo claim that Newcastle held preliminary talks to sign Ben Foster after he was released by Watford earlier this summer.

Newcastle boss Howe has ended up going for Karius though, seemingly preferring him to Foster right now.

Foster, 39, is ten years older than Karius and that may well have played a part in Howe’s decision-making here.

Foster has racked up almost 400 Premier League appearances in his career having turned out for Manchester United, Watford, Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion.

The former England international has been turning to the media of late, becoming something of a YouTube and podcast star.

Foster doesn’t seem tempted to retire just yet though and held talks with Newcastle before missing out on a move.

Leeds United were thought to be considering signing Foster back in June but they went with another veteran stopper, signing Joel Robles instead.

It’s now a sense of deja vu as Newcastle have seemingly picked another goalkeeper over Foster, with his route back into playing seemingly unclear.
