Newcastle United winger Cal Roberts was selected to start by Rafael Benitez last night.

Cal Roberts has admitted to the Chronicle that leaving Newcastle United on loan could still be a possibility this month.

Roberts was given a start for Newcastle last night in the FA Cup against Blackburn Rovers, and the youngster seized his opportunity.

The winger scored Newcastle’s second goal of the match in their 4-2 win at Ewood Park.

However, Roberts does not want to go back to playing development squad football at St. James’ Park.

And the prospect admits that he still needs to speak with Rafael Benitez about his future on Tyneside.

“Obviously the aim is to play in the first team,” Roberts said.

“If that is not possible I will think about loan options.

“I will see what happens in the next few days.”

Roberts was one of the stars of Newcastle’s pre-season, but was then overlooked by Benitez.

It remains to be seen if the 21-year-old will now be given more of a chance to play for the Magpies in the coming weeks.

Newcastle have a whole host of injury problems, and it could be that Roberts has now done enough to prove to Benitez he is ready for regular action.
